CA Resources for Families and Educators

For the families and educators committed to supporting their students’ journeys towards their goals, check out this list of California organizations that go above and beyond to provide college-going resources for middle school students:

A DEGREE WITH A GUARANTEE

The California Community Colleges and partnering institutions created this transfer program to make it easier for students like you to start at a community college, transfer to a guaranteed saved spot at a participating four-year university, and earn a Bachelor’s Degree.

ADVANCEMENT VIA INDIVIDUAL DETERMINATION (AVID)

AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a nonprofit that changes lives by helping schools shift to a more equitable, student-centered approach. AVID trains 80,000 educators annually to close the opportunity gap, so they can prepare all students for college, careers, and life.

CALIFORNIA ACADEMIC PARTNERSHIP PROGRAM (CAPP)

Equity and access are central to the work of the California Academic Partnership Program. Every day, CAPP focuses on finding ways to improve the academic quality of the state's public high schools so more students are ready to succeed in college.

CALIFORNIA STUDENT OPPORTUNITY AND ACCESS PROGRAM (CALSOAP)

CALSOAP projects share the common goal of improving the flow of information about postsecondary education and financial aid while raising achievement levels of targeted students. Some common services provided by the consortia include advising, tutoring, parent outreach, and college awareness workshops.

CSU STUDENT ADMISSIONS, FINANCIAL AID, AND OUTREACH RESOURCES

The outreach, admissions, and financial aid offices at CSU campuses oer students, parents, and counselors a wide variety of help for applying to, attending, and paying for the California State University system.

CSU STUDENT SUCCESS

The CSU has transformed academic preparation in an eort to provide all rst-time freshman the opportunity and support needed to be successful in college-level coursework. The CSU Student Success website provides guidance on new approaches to assessment, placement in General Education (GE) English and math/quantitative reasoning courses and the Early Start Program

EARLY ACADEMIC OUTREACH PROGRAM (EAOP)

EAOP helps students at underserved schools prepare for college and the work force, complete all UC and California State University (CSU) admissions requirements, and apply for college and financial aid. EAOP also guides families by showing them how to navigate complex college preparation, college application, and financial aid processes.

GAINING EARLY AWARENESS AND READINESS FOR UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMS (GEAR UP)

The California GEAR UP program is a whole-school systemic change model for creating the widest array of post-secondary opportunities—without remediation—for its participating schools and their students. Program services support the adults who influence a student’s education, specifically their teachers, administrators, counselors, and families.

MATH, ENGINEERING, SCIENCE ACHIEVEMENT (MESA)

MESA is a college and career prep engine that propels student diversity and achievement in science, technology, engineering, and math.

MIDDLE COLLEGE HIGH SCHOOL

Middle College High School (MCHS) is a unique program that enables at-risk students to obtain a quality high school education while receiving direct access to college courses and services.

PUENTE

Puente is a national program to increase the number of educationally disadvantaged students who enroll in four-year colleges and universities, earn college degrees and return to the community as mentors and leaders to future generations. Puente trains school and college faculty to provide rigorous instruction, focused academic counseling, and mentoring by members of the community.

TRIO UPWARD BOUND

Upward Bound provides fundamental support to participants in their preparation for college entrance. Upward Bound serves high school students from low-income families and high school students from families in which neither parent holds a Bachelor’s Degree.
